What is core aeration?

Core aeration is the process of mechanically removing small plugs of soil from your lawn. This creates channels that allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the soil more effectively.

The small soil plugs left on the surface will break down naturally within 1-2 weeks, returning nutrients to the lawn.

When is the best time to aerate?

For cool-season grasses like Tall Fescue (common in Virginia), the best times to aerate are spring (March-May) and fall (September-November).

Fall is ideal because it coincides with the natural growing season for cool-season grasses, giving new seed the best chance to establish before winter.

Should I add seeding?

Yes! Aeration creates the perfect conditions for overseeding. The holes provide excellent seed-to-soil contact, which dramatically improves germination rates.

If your lawn has thin areas, bare spots, or you want a thicker, more lush appearance, adding seeding is highly recommended.

How long until I see results?

For aeration only, you'll notice improved lawn health and color within 2-4 weeks as nutrients and water reach the roots more effectively.

For aeration with seeding, expect to see new grass seedlings emerge in 10-21 days, with the lawn filling in over 6-8 weeks.

Do I need to water after the service?

For aeration only, normal watering is sufficient. The improved soil structure will actually help your lawn retain moisture better.

For aeration with seeding, we recommend light, frequent watering (2-3 times daily for 5-10 minutes) for the first 2-3 weeks to keep seeds moist until germination.

When will my service be scheduled?

After purchase, your service is typically scheduled within 1-2 weeks depending on current demand and weather conditions.

You'll receive an email confirmation with scheduling details, and we'll notify you before and after the service is completed.

Do you need to be home for the service?

You don't need to be home for the service to be performed. That's what's great about the service notifications we have in place here at A Cut Above.
